Fall ball is here, signing day is 6 weeks out, and there are college coaches in the stands this weekend. Every Wednesday: one lesson, one answered question, one tiny task, one stealable template. Funny first, useful always. Let’s go.

The big lesson
A verbal is a handshake. November is the contract.
 6 weeks until this pen matters |
Signing day is November 11, exactly 6 weeks from today. If your daughter has verbally committed, congratulations. Now hear this: a verbal is not binding on anyone. The player can walk. And as this summer proved, the school can too.
Exhibit A: Memphis just pulled offers from three 2027 commits after the new 5 for 5 eligibility rule passed, because the math on a 25 player roster got brutal. Those girls did nothing wrong. The rules changed under their feet. |
Your 6 week playbook:

Keep the backup list warm. Do not go silent on every other coach until the pen actually hits paper in November. A short honest note keeps doors open without burning bridges. |

Ask the money question now. With rosters capped at 25, ask how your aid splits across the roster and get the numbers in writing. Vibes are not a financial plan. |

Use your visits. Official visits are for interrogating the program, not just touring the stadium. Ask about the 5 for 5 fallout: who is staying, who is going, where do you fit. |

Finish strong. Fall grades, fall ball, all of it. Coaches notice who coasts after committing. |
Celebrate the verbal. Just don’t get the tattoo yet.

Ask the scout
“My daughter verbally committed in August. Can we finally stop emailing other coaches?”
You can exhale. You cannot disappear. Until that signature exists, you are one rule change or coaching change away from being back on the market, and this fall already proved it.
The classy way to stay warm: a short note to the coaches you liked.
“We have committed to [School] and we are thrilled, but I wanted to thank you for your time and interest.” |
Most will congratulate you and mean it. A few will say “keep us posted,” which is coach speak for “call us if it falls through.” That is not disloyal. That is insurance.

Why this works: it is short, it has dates a coach can put on a calendar, and it arrives while coaches are deciding which fields to stand on. Send it before Friday.

Parents’ corner
Fall ball parent survival guide.
Pack the cooler. Lose the cowbell. And never, ever coach from the bleachers. That college coach in row 3 evaluating your daughter can hear you yelling “stay back on it,” and now she is evaluating you too.
Cheer like a fan, not like a hitting instructor. The best thing you can say all weekend is “good game, I love watching you play,” then drive home and let the cooler do the rest.

D1 coaches are in evaluation mode through November 22, with fall tournament weekends starting October 17. They are deciding which fields to stand on right now. |

November 9 to 12 is a dead period: no in person contact. That is signing week. Plan accordingly. |

The 5 for 5 eligibility rule is already reshuffling rosters. If your school went quiet, ask why before you assume the worst. |
