Softball to Baseball Pitch Speed Calculator
What does a softball pitch “feel like” in baseball terms? Convert in either direction, with the correct mound distance for every age — because a 12U pitch from 40 feet is a different animal than the same speed from 43.
The Math (It's Reaction Time)
A hitter's problem isn't the radar gun number — it's how long she has to see the ball, decide, and swing. That window is distance divided by speed. Softball is pitched from 43 feet (14U through college) versus baseball's 60 feet 6 inches, so every softball mph is worth about 1.41 baseball mph in reaction time. The formula: baseball mph = softball mph × (60.5 ÷ 43).
That's why college softball velocities in the 60s are genuinely elite company: a 65 mph pitch arrives with the reaction window of a 91 mph fastball. The fastest pitch in NCAA history — 79.4 mph by Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens — computes to a 111 mph baseball equivalent, faster than anything ever thrown in MLB.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert softball pitch speed to baseball?
Multiply the softball speed by the ratio of the mound distances. From the 43-foot softball mound to baseball's 60 feet 6 inches, the factor is about 1.41 — so a 60 mph softball pitch gives a hitter the reaction time of an 84 mph baseball fastball, and 70 mph feels like 98.5 mph.
What is a 70 mph softball pitch equivalent to in baseball?
About 98.5 mph. At 70 mph from 43 feet, the hitter has roughly 419 milliseconds to react — the same as facing 98.5 mph from a baseball mound at 60 feet 6 inches. Only a handful of pitchers in the world throw 70+; the NCAA record is 79.4 mph, set by Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens.
Why does the calculation change for younger softball players?
Because the mound moves. 10U pitches from 35 feet and 12U from 40 feet, versus 43 feet for 14U through college. A 50 mph pitch at 12U (40 ft) reaches the plate faster than 50 mph at 14U (43 ft), so its baseball equivalent is higher — that's why this calculator lets you pick the mound distance for both sports.
Is the conversion exact?
It's the standard distance-ratio convention every published chart uses, and it slightly understates how hard softball is. Pitchers release the ball several feet in front of the rubber in both sports, but a softball pitcher's stride eats a bigger share of a 43-foot distance than a baseball stride does of 60'6". Rise balls and movement pitches add another layer no formula captures.
Is softball pitching faster than baseball?
In raw mph, no — elite college softball sits in the 60s while MLB fastballs average the mid-90s. In reaction time, softball is comparable or harder: a 65 mph college softball pitch gives the hitter about the same reaction window as a 91 mph baseball fastball, from a pitcher standing much closer.
