How NAIA Softball Scholarships Work
NAIA softball programs may award up to 10 scholarship equivalencies per team. NAIA coaches generally have more flexibility than NCAA programs in structuring aid packages, and many NAIA schools combine athletic money with academic scholarships. NAIA eligibility rules also differ from the NCAA — transfers are often immediately eligible.
Softball is an equivalency sport — most scholarships are partial
Unlike headcount sports (such as FBS football or D1 basketball) where every scholarship is a full ride, college softball is an equivalency sport. A coach gets a pool of scholarship money — measured in "equivalencies" — and can split it into partial awards across the roster. One player might get 60% of tuition, another 30%, another books only. That's why a program with a traditional 12-equivalency budget can have 20+ players receiving athletic aid, and why very few softball players are on true full rides. The good news: partial athletic money stacks with academic scholarships, so your grades directly raise your total package.
