How Softball Age Cutoffs Work in 2026
For years, softball parents had to juggle different cutoff dates for every organization. That mostly ended with the Fall 2025 season, when PGF joined USSSA, USA Softball, Perfect Game, and NCS on a unified standard: a player's age group is set by her age on August 31 of the year the season starts. The change aligned age divisions with school graduating classes, which is exactly how college coaches evaluate recruits.
Two holdouts still use the older December 31 rule: Alliance Fastpitch (its championships and national qualifiers, per its published FAQ — despite widespread rumors of a September 1 switch) and Little League Softball. A fall-birthday player can therefore be one age group in USSSA or PGF play and a division older in Alliance or Little League. Watch the season labels too: USSSA names seasons by the ending year, so “the 2027 season” runs fall 2026 through summer 2027 and keys off August 31, 2026. And if your player was born exactly on September 1, she's on the boundary — organizations word the rule slightly differently, so confirm directly with the org before registering.

Yes. Every major sanctioning body allows playing up in an older division. Playing down is never allowed — no exceptions.
What age group should a 12-year-old play in softball?
It depends on when she turns 13. If she's still 12 on August 31, she's league age 12 and plays 12U for the travel season that starts that fall. If she turned 13 before September 1, she's league age 13 and moves to 14U (or 13U where offered).
