Softball Batting Average Calculator

Hits divided by at-bats — the oldest stat in the book, and still the one most often computed wrong because walks and sacrifices sneak into the denominator.

At-bats exclude walks, HBP, sacrifices — plate appearances that don't count

What Counts as an At-Bat

Counts as an at-bat

  • • Hits (singles, doubles, triples, home runs)
  • • Strikeouts and all other outs
  • • Reaching on an error
  • • Reaching on a fielder's choice

Not an at-bat

  • • Walks (BB)
  • • Hit by pitch (HBP)
  • • Sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies
  • • Catcher's interference

This is why a GameChanger line of 4 plate appearances with 2 hits, a walk, and a sac bunt is a 1.000-OBP day but a 2-for-2 — only two of the four trips were official at-bats.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate batting average in softball?

Divide hits by at-bats: AVG = H ÷ AB. A player with 30 hits in 90 at-bats is batting .333. Softball and baseball use the identical formula — the difference is what pitching and field dimensions do to the numbers.

What counts as an at-bat?

A plate appearance that ends in a hit, an out, or reaching on an error or fielder's choice. Walks, hit-by-pitch, sacrifices (bunts and flies), and catcher's interference do NOT count as at-bats — they're excluded from the denominator entirely.

What is a good batting average in softball?

Level matters. In 16U/18U showcase ball against strong pitching, .320+ is good and .400+ is exceptional. In NCAA D1, the league-wide average sits near .280, and hitting .350+ is all-conference territory. Youth travel averages run higher because pitching varies more.

Why is my daughter's average lower than her on-base percentage?

That's normal — OBP adds walks and hit-by-pitch to the numerator and denominator, so it's always equal to or higher than average. A patient hitter can bat .300 with a .420 OBP, and college coaches increasingly value that gap.

Do college coaches care about batting average?

They look at it, but in context: competition level, OPS, and quality of contact (exit velocity) all matter more than a raw average compiled against unknown pitching. A .450 average in weak pool play means less than .330 at PGF Nationals.
