Softball ERA Calculator

Earned run average the way softball actually scores it — normalized to 7-inning games. Most online ERA calculators silently assume baseball's 9 innings, which overstates a softball pitcher's ERA by about 29%.

Use .1 = one out, .2 = two outs (e.g. 32.1)

The Formula

ERA = (earned runs × 7) ÷ innings pitched. The multiplier is the length of a regulation game: it converts “runs allowed per inning” into “runs allowed per complete game.” Softball games are 7 innings, so softball uses 7 — simple, but nearly every generic calculator on the internet hardcodes baseball's 9.

Worked example: 14 earned runs in 70 innings. Softball: (14 × 7) ÷ 70 = 1.40. The same line through a 9-inning calculator reads 1.80 — a number that means nothing in a 7-inning sport. If you're comparing pitchers or filling in a recruiting profile, the 7-inning number is the one college coaches expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate ERA in softball?

ERA = (earned runs × 7) ÷ innings pitched. Softball uses 7 because a regulation game is 7 innings — baseball's formula multiplies by 9. A pitcher with 14 earned runs in 70 innings has a 1.40 softball ERA; a 9-inning calculator would wrongly report 1.80.

What is a good ERA in softball?

Context matters, but broadly: under 2.00 is excellent at most levels, 2.00-3.50 is solid, and anything under 1.50 against strong competition is elite. In NCAA D1, staff ERAs under 2.00 are top-25 territory.

What counts as an earned run?

A run that scores without the help of an error or passed ball. If the official scorer decides the runner would not have scored with clean defense, the run is unearned and doesn't count toward ERA.

How do I enter partial innings?

Use pitching notation: the decimal digit counts outs, not tenths. 32.1 means 32 innings plus one out (32⅓); 32.2 means 32⅔. A .3 is never valid — that's a full inning.

Do college coaches care about ERA?

Less than parents think. Travel-ball ERA is heavily shaped by defense and competition level, so coaches weight velocity, movement, command, and strikeout-to-walk ratio more. ERA against elite showcase competition is the version that gets noticed.
