What a contact period means
A contact period is the least restricted stretch of the year: a coach may make in-person recruiting contact off campus and evaluate you in person.
Coaches can
- Meet you in person off campus — at a tournament, at your school, at your home
- Watch you play or practise in person
- Host official and unofficial visits
- Call, text, email and DM as usual
Coaches cannot
- Contact you before the date their division allows coach-initiated contact at all — for Division I softball that is September 1 of your junior year, and it overrides the calendar
What you can do right now
None of these periods restrict you. An athlete may email, call, text or DM a college coach on any day of the year, in any division. The calendar only limits what a coach may do in return.

When is the 2026-27 contact period for college softball?
NCAA Division I softball has 2 contact periods in 2026-27: Aug 1 – Aug 9, 2026; Jun 12 – Jul 31, 2027. The summer window is much the longer of the two and is when most in-person recruiting happens.
Does a contact period mean any coach can contact me?
No — two separate rules have to both allow it. The calendar has to be in a contact period, and you have to be past the date your division permits coach-initiated contact at all. For Division I softball that date is September 1 of junior year. A sophomore during a contact period still cannot be contacted by a D1 coach. You, however, can contact them at any time.
Can I take an official visit during a contact period?
Yes. Official and unofficial visits are both permitted during a contact period, subject to the division's own visit rules. Since 2023 there is no cap on the total number of schools you may officially visit — one paid official visit per school, with no overall limit.

The other periods
Dead period
A dead period is a stretch when a college coach may not make in-person recruiting contact or evaluate you in person — anywhere, on or off their campus — and may not host official or unofficial visits.
Recruiting shutdown
A recruiting shutdown is the strictest period on the calendar: no recruiting of any form is permitted — no contact, no evaluation, no official or unofficial visits, no correspondence, and no making or receiving phone calls.
Evaluation period
An evaluation period is when a coach may assess your academic qualifications and playing ability off campus — they can watch you play, but they may not make in-person contact with you while they do.
Quiet period
A quiet period is when in-person recruiting contact is permitted only on the college's own campus. No off-campus contact or evaluation may take place.
