Checking today's recruiting period…
The rule that never changes
None of these periods restrict you. An athlete may email, call, text or DM a college coach on any day of the year, in any division. The calendar only limits what a coach may do in return.
The five periods
A dead period is a stretch when a college coach may not make in-person recruiting contact or evaluate you in person — anywhere, on or off their campus — and may not host official or unofficial visits.

Recruiting shutdownA recruiting shutdown is the strictest period on the calendar: no recruiting of any form is permitted — no contact, no evaluation, no official or unofficial visits, no correspondence, and no making or receiving phone calls.

Contact periodA contact period is the least restricted stretch of the year: a coach may make in-person recruiting contact off campus and evaluate you in person.

Evaluation periodAn evaluation period is when a coach may assess your academic qualifications and playing ability off campus — they can watch you play, but they may not make in-person contact with you while they do.

Quiet periodA quiet period is when in-person recruiting contact is permitted only on the college's own campus. No off-campus contact or evaluation may take place.

The 2026-27 calendar, day by day
The NCAA prints this as overlapping layers — a dead period sits inside a longer evaluation period, and shutdowns sit inside the quiet period. Below it is flattened, so each row is the rule that actually applies on those dates.

The 6 weekends coaches can watch travel ball
Almost every evaluation day in 2026-27 covers high school softball only. Club and travel ball may be evaluated on these 6 weekends and no others — which makes them the dates worth building a fall schedule around.

Signing in 2026-27
Softball is an "all other sports" signing sport: the first day a written offer of athletics aid may be signed in 2026-27 is Nov 12, 2026. No NCAA end date — each school sets its own deadline under its policy for awarding athletics aid.
Which divisions actually have a recruiting calendar
Only Division I publishes a softball-specific calendar. Below that, the answer to “when can coaches contact me” is mostly “any time”. For the full contact, scholarship and signing rules at each level, see softball recruiting rules by division.
| Level | Dated calendar? | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| NCAA Division I | Yes — a softball-specific calendar | Contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods plus 3 recruiting shutdowns, published each year for softball alone. Everything on this page describes it. |
| NCAA Division II | One shared all-sports calendar | Softball falls under "all other sports" and has a single restricted window in 2026-27: Nov 9 – Nov 11, 2026, a signing-date dead period. There are no D2 softball contact, evaluation or quiet periods. |
| NCAA Division III | No | The NCAA publishes no Division III recruiting calendar. D3 coaches may contact recruits at any time, by any method, year round. |
| NAIA | No | The NAIA is not part of the NCAA and does not operate an NCAA-style recruiting calendar. Contact is permitted year round. |
| Junior college (NJCAA) | No | Junior college recruiting runs year round with no NCAA calendar periods. JUCO programs recruit and sign on a rolling basis. |
Where these dates come from
Every date on this page is transcribed from a primary NCAA document. A wrong dead-period date can lead an athlete into contact that is not permissible, so nothing here is inferred from a previous season or from a third-party summary. Always confirm against the NCAA before acting on a date that matters.

Frequently asked questions
What is the NCAA softball recruiting calendar for 2026-27?
The NCAA publishes a Division I softball recruiting calendar each year that divides the year into contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods, plus recruiting shutdowns. The 2026-27 calendar runs from Aug 1, 2026 to Jul 31, 2027. The full period-by-period breakdown is on this page, taken from the NCAA's published calendar.
Can I contact college coaches during a dead period?
Yes. Nothing on the recruiting calendar restricts you — an athlete may email, call or message a coach on any day of the year. The calendar limits what a coach may do in return. The one period where a coach cannot reply at all is a recruiting shutdown.
Which recruiting period is it right now?
The badge at the top of this page works it out from today's date against the NCAA's published calendar, and tells you when the current period ends. Each period also has its own page explaining exactly what it allows.
Do Division II and Division III softball have recruiting calendars?
Division II publishes one calendar covering all sports, and softball's only restricted window in 2026-27 is a signing-date dead period. Division III, NAIA and junior college have no recruiting calendar at all — coaches at those levels may contact recruits year round.
