What a recruiting shutdown means

A recruiting shutdown is the strictest period on the calendar: no recruiting of any form is permitted — no contact, no evaluation, no official or unofficial visits, no correspondence, and no making or receiving phone calls.

Coaches can

  • Nothing. A shutdown is a complete stop on recruiting activity

Coaches cannot

  • Call you, or take your call
  • Email, text or DM you
  • Meet you or evaluate you in person
  • Host any visit

What you can do right now

None of these periods restrict you. An athlete may email, call, text or DM a college coach on any day of the year, in any division. The calendar only limits what a coach may do in return.

  • Write your emails now and send them the day the shutdown lifts
  • Update your video, stats and target list — none of that involves a coach
  • Take the time off. It is deliberately built around Thanksgiving and the winter holidays

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dead period and a recruiting shutdown?

A dead period stops in-person contact and evaluation, but coaches can still call, text and email. A recruiting shutdown stops everything, including correspondence and phone calls in both directions. The shutdown is the newer and stricter of the two, and it is the reason a coach may go completely silent for a few days around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

When are the 2026-27 NCAA softball recruiting shutdowns?

For NCAA Division I softball: Nov 25 – Nov 29, 2026; Dec 22 – Dec 26, 2026; Dec 31, 2026 – Jan 2, 2027. They sit inside the longer quiet period that runs Nov 23, 2026 – Jan 2, 2027, and each one is built around a holiday.

If a coach does not reply during a shutdown, does that mean they are not interested?

No — and this matters, because the shutdowns fall over holidays when families often have time to work on recruiting. A coach who goes quiet across Thanksgiving or the days after Christmas may simply be prohibited from answering. Send your email; expect the reply after the shutdown ends.
