NCAA Softball Evaluation Periods, 2026-27
Most of the 2026-27 Division I softball year is an evaluation period, but nearly all of it covers high school softball only. Club and travel ball may be evaluated on just 6 weekends all year.

What a evaluation period means
An evaluation period is when a coach may assess your academic qualifications and playing ability off campus — they can watch you play, but they may not make in-person contact with you while they do.
Coaches can
- Watch you play or practise off campus
- Assess your academics and playing ability
- Call, text, email and DM you
Coaches cannot
- Make in-person contact with you off campus — a coach at your game may not come and talk to you
- Evaluate club or travel ball outside the weekends specifically marked for it
What you can do right now
None of these periods restrict you. An athlete may email, call, text or DM a college coach on any day of the year, in any division. The calendar only limits what a coach may do in return.
- Tell coaches exactly where and when you are playing, well in advance

Frequently asked questions
When can college coaches watch club or travel softball in 2026-27?
On 6 weekends only: Oct 17 – Oct 18, 2026; Oct 24 – Oct 25, 2026; Oct 31 – Nov 1, 2026; Nov 7 – Nov 8, 2026; Nov 14 – Nov 15, 2026; Nov 21 – Nov 22, 2026. Every other evaluation day in 2026-27 is limited to scholastic — that is, high school — practice and competition. If you play a large travel schedule, these are the dates worth building around.
Why did a coach watch my whole game and not say anything?
Because during an evaluation period they are not permitted to. A coach may evaluate you off campus but may not make in-person contact with you there. Silence at a tournament is not disinterest — it is usually the rule. Follow up by email afterwards.
What is the difference between an evaluation period and a contact period?
Both let a coach watch you play. Only a contact period lets them speak with you in person off campus. An evaluation period is watch-but-do-not-approach; a contact period is watch-and-talk.

The other periods
Dead period
A dead period is a stretch when a college coach may not make in-person recruiting contact or evaluate you in person — anywhere, on or off their campus — and may not host official or unofficial visits.
Recruiting shutdown
A recruiting shutdown is the strictest period on the calendar: no recruiting of any form is permitted — no contact, no evaluation, no official or unofficial visits, no correspondence, and no making or receiving phone calls.
Contact period
A contact period is the least restricted stretch of the year: a coach may make in-person recruiting contact off campus and evaluate you in person.
Quiet period
A quiet period is when in-person recruiting contact is permitted only on the college's own campus. No off-campus contact or evaluation may take place.
