What a dead period means
A dead period is a stretch when a college coach may not make in-person recruiting contact or evaluate you in person — anywhere, on or off their campus — and may not host official or unofficial visits.
Coaches can
- Call, text, email or DM you — a dead period does not stop electronic contact
- Watch your highlight video and read anything you send
- Reply to your emails and answer your calls
- Keep recruiting you in every way that is not in person
Coaches cannot
- Meet you in person, on or off their campus
- Watch you play or practise in person
- Host you on an official or unofficial visit
What you can do right now
None of these periods restrict you. An athlete may email, call, text or DM a college coach on any day of the year, in any division. The calendar only limits what a coach may do in return.

What are the NCAA softball dead period dates for 2026-27?

Can coaches email or call during a dead period?
Yes. A dead period only stops in-person contact and in-person evaluation. Calls, texts, emails and social media messages are all still permitted, in both directions. This is the most common misunderstanding about dead periods — and it means a dead period is a good time to email, not a reason to wait. The exception is a recruiting shutdown, which is stricter and does stop electronic contact.
Is a dead period the same as a no-contact period?
"No contact period" is not an official NCAA term, but people almost always mean the dead period when they say it. The NCAA's five defined periods are contact, evaluation, quiet, dead and recruiting shutdown. If you have been told coaches cannot contact you at all right now, check whether it is a dead period (in-person only) or a recruiting shutdown (everything).
Can I visit a campus during a dead period?
Not as a recruiting visit. Official and unofficial visits are both off during a dead period. You can still visit a campus as an ordinary member of the public — a regular campus tour through the admissions office is not a recruiting activity — but you cannot meet the softball staff while you are there.

Recruiting shutdown
A recruiting shutdown is the strictest period on the calendar: no recruiting of any form is permitted — no contact, no evaluation, no official or unofficial visits, no correspondence, and no making or receiving phone calls.
Contact period
A contact period is the least restricted stretch of the year: a coach may make in-person recruiting contact off campus and evaluate you in person.
Evaluation period
An evaluation period is when a coach may assess your academic qualifications and playing ability off campus — they can watch you play, but they may not make in-person contact with you while they do.
Quiet period
A quiet period is when in-person recruiting contact is permitted only on the college's own campus. No off-campus contact or evaluation may take place.
